Introduction

Rifaxilan ­_Manufactured by Faran Shimi Pharmaceutical Company_ is a derivative of the antibiotic rifamycin with minimal gastrointestinal absorption and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity covering both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms with limited cross-resistance. Beyond its antibacterial activity, such as alteration of virulence, prevention of gut mucosal adherence and bacterial translocation, rifaximin exerts some anti-inflammatory effects with only a minimal effect on the overall composition of the gut microbiota.

Rifaxilan is available in 200 and 550mg film coated tablets. The tablets are packaged in one box with a leaflet.

  • Irritable bowel syndrome without constipation
  • Hepatic encephalopathy, treatment or prevention
  • Clostridioides difficile infection
  • Travelers’ diarrhea

  • Store below 30° C and protect from light and moisture.

Important Information

How to use Rifaxilan?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, without Constipation:
• Adults: 550mg TDS for 14 days
• Pediatrics: ≥8 years and adolescents: 10 to 30 mg/kg/day in divided doses

Clostridioides difficile infection:
• Adults: 550mg BD or 400mg TDS
• Pediatrics: <12 years: 15 to 30 mg/kg/day in divided doses TDS for 20 days; usual adult dose: 400mg/dose
≥12 years and adolescents: Oral: 400 mg TDS for 20 days.

Hepatic encephalopathy, treatment or prevention:
• Adults: 550 mg BD or 400 mg TDS for at least 3 months.
Traveler’s Diarrhea (off-Label):
• Adults: Prophylaxis: 200 mg 1 to 3 times daily for duration of level. Treatment: 200 g TDS for 3 days.
• Pediatrics: 3 to 11 years: Limited data available: 100 mg 4 times daily for up to 5 days. ≥12 years and adolescents: 200 mg TDS for 3 days.

What other drugs could affect Rifaxilan?

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over‐the‐counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Opium tincture may interfere with other medications you are taking.

Is Rifaxilan safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Rifaxilan should be done under the supervision of a physician.

What to do if you miss a dose?

• Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
• If it’s close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
• Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

What to do if you overdose?

If you think there has been an overdose, call your doctor, pharmacist, or other health care provider right away.

Precautions and contraindications

Who should not use Rifaxilan?

Hypersensitivity to rifaximin, other rifamycin antibiotics, or any component of the formulation

Who should use with caution?

Taking this medicine may causes the urine to turn reddish orange. If the symptoms persist or worsen (24 to 48 hours after starting the treatment), stop the medication and consult a doctor.
Rifaximin can reduce the effectiveness of vaccines containing live bacteria (such as typhoid vaccine).
Use with caution in people with severe liver failure.

Side Effects

What are some side effects of Rifaxilan?

The most common adverse effects are including: Peripheral edema, Nausea, Ascites, Dizziness, fatigue
