Noscapine / licorice extract Syrup


Introduction

Noscough® cough syrup _manufactured by Faran Shimi Pharmaceutical company_ contain the active ingredient Noscapine and Liquorice extract, a medicine that has an antitussive (cough-suppressing) effect. Noscough® is supplied in 100ml bottle and each 5 mL contains 7 mg noscapine and 5 mg licorice extract for oral administration, a bottle is packed in a box with a leaflet.
Noscapine is a phthalate isoquinoline non-narcotic alkaloid derived from the opium poppy Papaver somniferum, a medicine that has an antitussive (cough-suppressing) effect. Noscapine's antitussive effects appear to be primarily mediated by its sigma receptor agonist activity.

Indications

Noscough® indicated for only treat dry (tickly) coughs. It does not work for relieving productive (chesty) coughs. Noscough® is suitable for use in adults and children from the age of three years.

Important Information

Dosing

Adults
Adults and children aged 12 and above: 15-20ml (3-4 cup) three to four times a day (TDS or QID).
Renal Impairment
Use with caution in severe impairment.
Hepatic Impairment
Use with caution in severe impairment.
Pediatrics
Children aged 3 to 6: 5 ml (1cup), three to four times a day (TDS or QID).
Children aged 6 to 12: 10 ml (2cup), three to four times a day (TDS or QID).

Administration

Administer with or without food.
Be sure to leave at least four hours between doses.
Shake bottle gently before use.
Noscough® comes with a dosage beaker for measuring the correct amount.

Moderate Interactions (Risk D)

Azelastine, Bromperidiol, Eluxadoline, Opioids (mixed agonist/antagonist), Orphenadrine, Oxomemazine, Paraldehyde & Thalidomide.

Pregnancy

Noscough® should not be used by pregnant women

Breast-Feeding

Noscough® should not be used by breast-feeding women

Contraindications & Cautions

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to noscapine, morphine or any component of the formulation.
Convulsive states.
Diarrhea associated with infection.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding.

Warnings/Precautions

Concerns related to adverse effects:

CNS depression: may cause CNS depression, which may impair physical or mental abilities.
Hypotension: may cause hypotension, use with caution in patients with Hypovolemia, Cardiovascular disease or drugs which may exaggerate hypotensive effects.
Opioid agonist toxicities: Noscapine may share the toxic potentials of opioid agonists and precautions of opioid agonist therapy should be observed.
Respiratory disease: use with caution in patients with pre-existing respiratory compromise, COPD or other obstructive pulmonary disease, and kyphoscoliosis or other skeletal disorder which may alter respiratory function; critical respiratory depression may occur, even at therapeutic dosages.

Side Effects

Side effects have rarely been seen in therapeutic doses.
Hypotension, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, constipation, nausea and vomiting.
